Il Cilento

Maybe the name “Cilento” doesn’t mean anything to you yet?

Il Cilento is tucked just around the corner, it is not far from the famous Amalfi Coast, and is one of the best kept secrets in Italy.

It’s Italy’s second largest national park, spectacular mountain ranges, pristine beaches, some of the best festivals in the country, steeped in history and centuries old ruins, just breathtakingly beautiful.

Once you’ve found your way there, you’ll keep coming back: crystal clear sea, rugged mountain ranges and rolling hills, charming places and wonderful people.

Instead of tourist excitement and hotel complexes you will find a little known holiday paradise in the Cilento.

Cilento Coast

The Cilento territory extends from the city of Paestum, home to the Doric temples, up to the Gulf of Policastro, near the city of Sapri. Therefore the vastness of the territory and the plurality of cultures meant that it was marked by a multiplicity of traditions.
More than cities, along the coast there are tourist “villages”, in fact among the most visited villages we can find the beautiful Santa Maria di Castellabate, Acciaroli, the ancient Velia, Palinuro, Marina di Camerota, Scario and Policastro Bussentino . Instead the most important cities are Vallo della Lucania located in the heart of the Cilento National Park, Sapri and Agropoli: the latter is the largest by population as well as the main port.

"This region is reserved for all those who are looking for relaxation, who love beautiful beaches and crystal clear sea, like to spend their holidays actively and are looking for the Italian way of life".

Agropoli

Large parts of the area were declared the “Parco Nazionale del Cilento e Vallo di Diano” more than twenty-five years ago, which has been a World Heritage Site since 1998.

Whether golden yellow sandy beach, fine pebble beach or adventurous rocky beach. The beaches along the coast are diverse and varied. There are wide beaches several kilometers long, local town beaches and small, sacred bays. What they all have in common is the incredible water quality of the sea. The beaches on the Cilento Coast are a true paradise, be it for long walks with a view of the horizon, be it snorkeling to find visual contact with fish, to build sandcastles with children or to relax and listen to the sound of the sea.

Cilento, a quality but economical tourism

From il Cilento it’s very easy to visit those expensive hotspots like Capri, Amalfi, Ravello without spending too much money…

Cilento between myth and legend

The region is rich in Greek mythology and legends, as can be seen from the names of some cities, as is visible in the remains of the colonies of Paestum (ancient Poseidonia) and Velia (Elea). The latter was also the seat of “Eleati”, a school of pre-Socratic philosophers such as Parmenides, Zeno of Elea and Melisso di Samo.
